Service learning is a teaching methodology that enhances student learning. Several faculty in our department, including Prof. Christina Biron and Prof. Carlos Benavides have implemented service learning projects in their courses, enabling students to improve their Spanish skills and knowledge about Hispanic culture while at the same time engaging in activities that benefit the local Hispanic community (mainly New Bedford, MA).

Our department works in coordination with the Center for Civic Engagement, the entity at UMD dedicated to promoting the implementation of service learning projects in all disciplines throughout the university. To learn more about service learning at UMD, please visit the Center. On this website you will find a definition of the concept of service learning, as well as the vision, mission, goals and objectives of the Center for Civic Engagement.
