SARAH MALAKOFF: Biography

Sarah Malakoff is a full-time lecturer in Photography. She has been teaching photography since 1999 at institutions such as Bowdoin College, Brown University, Maine College of Art, Rhode Island School of Design and Wellesley College.

Malakoff's large-scale color photographs are examinations of the home and its psychologically charged, uncanny spaces and objects. She creates images that seem ordinary at first, but upon closer inspection, are fraught with instabilities. The images are both grounded in reality that the medium of photography implies and exaggerated or made extraordinary by details both evident and subtle.

Her work is represented by the Howard Yezerski Galley in Boston, Massachusetts and by Plane Space in New York, New York where she has had several solo exhibitions. Her photographs have also been shown recently at The DeCordova Museum, The Portland Museum of Art, The Danforth Museum of Art, The Smith College Museum of Art, and San Francisco Camerawork. Her most recent show at Plane Space was reviewed on Artforum.com and in the April 2007 issue of Art in America and a recent project has been published in the Fall 2007 issue of Esopus Magazine.
