A limited number of teaching and research assistantships are available. These are awarded on a competitive basis. For prospective students, the selection of candidates is based on academic transcripts from the student's home institution, recommendation letters, GRE scores, and where applicable, TOEFL scores. The number of applicants typically exceeds the number of positions available.

For continuing students, the Department makes every effort to accommodate the financial needs of Physics M.S. students who are in good academic standing. Requests from students in other departments for teaching assistantships are generally only considered when no Physics student is available for the assignment.
