Strong Outing From Southpaw Chris Dargon Lifts Bears
Bridgewater, MA - Junior lefthander Chris Dargon (Norwood, MA) tossed a complete game three-hitter to guide the Bears to a 4-3 win over the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth in non-conference baseball action this afternoon from BSC's Alumni Park.
With the win the Bears improved to 17-13 on the season, while the loss dropped UMass to 18-14.
After a shaky start, Dargon settled down and allowed just two hits over the final seven innings as he improved to 2-1 on the year. For the game the southpaw allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out seven.
UMD's Pat Reedy was the tough luck loser as he dropped to 3-5 on the season.
The Bears got on the board early, pushing across a pair of runs in the first inning. After Paul Hasenfus (Norfolk, MA) and Jim Sullivan (Tewksbury, MA) opened the inning with a pair of singles, Jeremy Winters doubled to score Hasenfus with the first run of the game. Anthony Taormina (Plymouth, MA) made the score 2-0 when he reached on an infield error scoring Sullivan from third.
Dargon helped UMass get a run back in the top of the second as he loaded the bases on three straight walks to open the inning. Robert Deluca followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1. Dargon, however, avoided any further damage by retiring the next three batters, the last two on strike outs.
BSC added two more runs in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles from Hasenfus and Sullivan. Sullivan's hit would prove to be the decisive one as it gave the Bears the 4-1 lead at the time.
UMass would cut the lead to 4-3 with single runs in the seventh and eighth thanks in large part to some shaky BSC defense, but Dargon was able to close things out by striking out the side in the ninth to preserve the win for the Bears.
