How we can help you

The office can evaluate and treat most problems that students have; sore throats, coughs, the flu, skin problems, gyn problems, birth control, orthopedic injuries, and stress issues are some of the more common complaints.

We also help students with chronic health problems adjust to taking care of themselves. Every year, there are students who have problems such as seizure disorders, cardiac problems, diabetes, eating disorders, and other chronic issues where Health Services consults with the primary care provider to establish a treatment plan.

Health Services can administer maintenance allergy regimes as long as we have the serum and schedule from the student's allergist. These "allergy shots" are given while the physician is here.

When a student has a problem that Health Services can't handle, we may:

  • Refer to an off campus health care provider
  • Consult with the student's primary care provider
  • With the student's permission, call the parents

Making an appointment

We ask that all students CALL FIRST.
Phone: x8982 or x6641

Appointments can be made for:

  • Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 8:30am - 5pm
  • Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30am - 6pm

What to bring

Please bring your insurance card or insurance information to your visit.

Each time you visit Health Services for care, we are able to bill your insurance (whether it's your student health insurance plan through the university, your own plan, or a family health insurance plan). In addition, Health Services charges a $15 co-pay for all preventative visits (immunizations, gyn exams, athletic physicals). We do not charge a co-pay for illness visits (colds, flus, sore throats, etc.).

To pay the co-pay for preventative visits, students must put money on their UMass Pass cards (use the "UMDollars" account). The Health Services office does not accept cash, check, or charge.

Emergencies

All emergencies need to call x9191.

If you are in need of first aid or you have an urgent issue that is not an emergency, we do accept walk-ins in special cases, where a nurse can evaluate you. Typically, physician and nurse practitioner visits are by appointment only.
