Criteria for Meeting SUS credit: Sustainability Studies Goals and Learning Outcomes

New or existing courses coarse proposals which seek cross-listing with Sustainability Studies must incorporate one or more of the goals below, and proposal must be approved by the Sustainability Studies Curriculum Review Board.

Goal: To investigate sustainability by conducting an integrated critical analysis across disciplines

Associated learning outcome: Students will have developed analytic skill reading across disciplines; students will have attuned themselves to communicate effectively (in speech and/or writing) with audiences from disparate disciplinary and cultural backgrounds.

Goal: To understand the challenges of sustainability in relationship to the earth's finite resources

Associated learning outcome: Students will have identified, assessed, and articulated the challenges of meeting a growing world population with finite natural resources (land, water, energy). Students will have analyzed and appraised the prospects and limits of technological innovation as a means of meeting those challenges.

Goal: To determine how social, economic, and physical systems interconnect and reciprocate on micro and macro levels, as they relate to sustainability

Associated learning outcome: Students will have integrated social, economic, and scientific principles of sustainability into an active heuristic able to be carried forth into their prospective professions.

Goal: To assess various ideological and cultural representations of human society and its relationship to the natural world, as they relate to sustainability

Associated learning outcome: Students will have contextualized current, local issues of sustainability historically within a global perspective. Students will have explicated cultural and ideological assumptions about humankind's relationship to the planet as communicated through various media (mass media, scholarly papers, religious canon, etc.).

Goal: To think critically and creatively about sustainable solutions to global problems

Associated learning outcome: Students will have diagnosed unsustainable practices (personal, local, regional, national, global) and will have designed solutions to those problems.
