The VCCS is proud to acknowledge teaching excellence in a variety of ways.

  • The Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence acknowledges one teaching faculty member annually who distinctly represents the teaching excellence found at VCCS college(s). The award provides the recipient with a VCCS stole suitable for wearing with academic regalia and $5,000.
  • The SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Awards recognize excellence in teaching, research and service among the faculties of Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities. The VCCS is proud of the increasing numbers of community college faculty receive this award. For more information click on the page link to the left or go to the  SCHEV Website.
  • The New Horizons Awards include three categories: Excellence in Education which includes three subcategories: ( Innovative Use of Technology - Face-to-Face and Online Classroom, Improving Student Success - Institutional and Best Practices in Teaching - Face-to-Face.), Recognition of Excellence and Early Implementer. This new focus is centered on teaching and learning. We have renamed the Technology in Education awards to the more inclusive Excellence in Education awards. Of course those looking to share their latest technological advancements are encouraged to participate, but we also want to hear from the rest of you—those with ideas to share that may be low tech but highly effective, and those who contribute mightily to student success from outside the classroom. Recognition of Excellence recognizes faculty excellence within the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) in the following categories: Academic advancement; publication in peer-reviewed journal;, publication of text book, popular book or book chapter; International/national scholarship and fellowship awards; honors and awards (for teaching, service, etc.); presentation at international conferences; leadership positions in regional or national professional organizations; other notable accomplishments. Early Implementer recognizes individuals or teams implementing an idea promoting the success of students that they first heard about at the New Horizons 2008 or 2009 conferences.
