STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES PROGRAM

The mission of the Students with Disabilities Program is to provide an integrated and cohesive set of support programs, services and activities for students with disabilities. Our goal is to maximize the educational potential of each student with a disability while helping him or her develop and maintain independence. The program exists in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, no person with a disability, will on the basis of that disability, be denied full and equal access for participation in programs, services and activities.

Disabilities Defined

An individual with a disability is defined as any person who:

·         has a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits one or more major life activities, (including walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, working, caring for oneself, or performing manual tasks),

·         has a record of such impairment or

·         is regarded as having such an impairment.

Some physical or mental impairments are, but not limited to:

Attention Deficit -Hyperactive Disorder (ADD/ADHD)

Deaf/Hearing Impairment

Specific Learning Disability (SLD)

Physical/Mobility Impairment 

Psychological/Psychiatric Disability

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Blind/Visual Impairment

The Students with Disabilities Program provides services to University students who meet program guidelines. To become eligible for services, documentation of the disability from a qualified professional must be provided upon request.

Services Include:

·         Reasonable accommodations

·         Priority registration and scheduling

·         Alternate testing procedures

·         Exam proctoring

·         Extended time for papers/projects/tests

·         Cassette taped lectures

·         Voter registration

·         Auxiliary aids

·         Alternative formats for printed materials

·         Assistive technology and adaptive equipment

·         Note taker

·         Readers

·         Scribes

·         Accessible classrooms

·         Personal counseling

·         Referrals

·         Virginia relay and TTY

While self-identification is strictly voluntary, it is to the student's advantage to initiate or request services in this process as early as possible. Records and information concerning students are confidential.
