At the conclusion of the 2011-12 basketball season, head coach James Hill, Jr. had twelve Lady Trojans receive All-CIAA Academic Honors. VSU’s Theresa Alexander, Yashica Blakney, Shantel Crout, Jasmine Deloatche, Frances Nerius, Briana Holt, Brittnay Newby-Ellis, Kiara Walton, Ashley Whitaker, Quiana Kizer, Asya Smith, and Marquilla Evans all mainitained a scholastic average of 3.00 or better while participating in CIAAA sports.

The Lady Trojans fell in a double overtime thriller to the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University on the second day of the CIAA Basketball Tournament. Marquilla Evans (senior/ Portsmouth, VA) scored a game-high 16 points nailing a perfect 4 of 4 shots from three-point land and Quiana Kizer (junior/ Alexandria, VA) followed with 15 points, both from the VSU bench.
Brianna Holt (junior/ Selmer, TN) led all players with 19 points, hitting two pivotal 3-pointers to spark a decisive 17-5 run as Virginia State held off the upset-minded Blue Bears 72-54 to advance to the tournament’s second round at TimeWarner Cable Arena.
Now in his sixth season at the helm of Virginia State’s women’s basketball program, James Hill, Jr. is approaching his first milestone in the coaching ranks; he his two wins away from his 100th career victory. Hill will be the first ever coach at VSU to reach the 100th win plateau in the NCAA era.
LaMesha Deal recorded her sixth double-double of the season to lead the Lady Trojans past the Hawks of Chowan University 74-72 in Murfreesboro, NC on Thursday, Feb. 23. Deal scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Virginia State shot 44% from the field and outscored the Hawks bench 44-12.
