Virginia State University’s baseball team eliminated the Falcons of Saint Augustine’s College with an 8-2 win on Thursday, April 19th at the 2012 CIAA Baseball Championships. Seven Trojans Named to 2012 All-CIAA Baseball Team

Seven Virginia State University’s baseball student-athletes were named to the 2012 All-CIAA baseball Team announced on Tuesday, April 17th by the CIAA. Joshua Markins (3B) was named to the All-CIAA First Team and All-CIAA Rookie Team, while (DH) Michael Whiten, (UTIL) Kelvin Davis, and (C) John McCarty were all named to the All-CIAA Second Team. (LHP) Nicholas Persad and (2B) Tyler Coleman was also named to the All-CIAA Second Team as well as the All-CIAA Rookie Team along with (SS) Nicholas Christopher.

RHP Nicholas Christopher (freshman/ Dinwiddie, VA) set a modern day Virginia State University baseball record, picking up his seventh win of the season in a 5-1 victory for the Trojans over Shaw University in the earlier game of a double-header on Saturday, April 14th . Nicholas struck-out eight batters, allowed three hits, and only one earned run.

RHP Maso Cotton (sophomore/ Vauxhall, NJ) picked up his fifth win of the season by striking out a career-high 13 batters in a 5-1 conference win for the Trojans over Lincoln University on Wednesday, April 12 in Oxford, PA. Virginia State University’s baseball team also won their 20th game of the season, clinching their ninth straight season with 20+ overall wins.

The Trojans scored the winning run in the eighth inning after a bases loaded walk by the Tigers. Catcher John McCarty led the Trojans with three hits and outfielder Cameron Cox added two RBI’s.
