The men’s tennis team at Virginia State University met up with Winston-Salem State in the 2012 CIAA Tennis Semifinals on Friday, April 20th , but lost 5-3 and were eliminated. The Trojans conclude their season with 11-2 conference record.
Virginia State University’s men’s tennis team defeated Virginia Union University 5-0 in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 CIAA Men’s Tennis Tournament on Thursday, April 19th.
The Trojans were defeated 5-4 by Coppin State on April 9 in Petersburg, VA on Senior Day. Javan Gardinier (senior/ San Francisco, CA)and Nicholas Brown (sophomore/ Los Angeles, CA) both picked up wins in singles play.
Virginia State University’s men’s tennis program won all three weekly awards for matches played through April 1, 2012 and were recognized as CIAA Tennis Players of the Week. Matthew Brown (sophomore/ Los Angeles, CA) was named CIAA Player of the Week, Evan Dirksen (freshman/ Chicago, IL) was named CIAA Rookie of the Week, and Gene Thompson was named CIAA Coach of the Week.
Virginia State’s men’s tennis team were crowned 2012 CIAA Northern Division Champions after their undefeated season against the CIAA Northern Divisional teams. They went 6-0 against their divisional teams; Chowan, Lincoln, and Virginia Union.
The Trojans breezed through CIAA Northern Division play with wins over Chowan (7-2), Lincoln (8-1), and Virginia Union (9-0) in Petersburg, VA on March 23-25. VSU improved their record to 8-2 in the CIAA conference.
In his seventh season as head men’s tennis coach at Virginia State University, Gene Thompson won his 100th career game on Saturday, March 17th against Winston-Salem State, 6-3. Thompson and his Trojans won three straight matches in Charlotte, NC; two wins over Johnson C. Smith and his 100th career victory over Winston-Salem State.
Virginia State University’s tennis program held a 10 & Under Quick Start Workshop on the campus of VSU on Wednesday, March 14, sponsored by The United States Tennis Association (USTA). The Petersburg Parks and Recreation Department, VSU’s Student Activities, as well as several student-athletes on both the men’s and women’s tennis teams at VSU participated in the workshop.
The men’s tennis team at Virginia State University hosted Saint Augustine’s and Shaw this past weekend in Ettrick, VA. The Trojans defeated Saint Augustine’s 9-0, 9-0 in two separate games on Saturday March 10th and on Sunday, March 11th.
The Trojans men’s tennis team suffered a loss in a non-conference dual at the Centre Court Tennis Complex in Hampton, VA on Saturday afternoon. Virginia State dropped the match 6-3 against the Pirates of Hampton University. Three Trojans picked up victories in singles play.
Head coach, Gene Thompson and his men’s tennis team at Virginia State University are currently ranked 7th in the Atlantic team rankings released on Nov. 9th. Senior, Emmanuel Haug is ranked 18th in the Atlantic region and is also ranked 10th in doubles play with senior teammate, Avery Saunders.
Twin brothers, Matthew and Nicholas Brown both won in singles and in doubles competition, but the men’s tennis team at Virginia State University loss 5-4 to the Rams of Shepherd University on Friday, Oct.14th in Ettrick, VA.
