Dr. Rodney Gaines received all three of his professional degrees from Virginia Tech: A B.S. in Business Finance in 1989, M.S. in Health and Physical Education (Exercise Science) in 1996, and a PhD in 2001 in Education, Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Health Promotion and Education Research. 

He served one year as the coordinator of assessment in the Division of Student affairs at Virginia Tech, and also served as the assessment coordinator for Norfolk State University. Dr. Gaines taught 5 years as an Assistant Professor at Norfolk State University, and also started the first Strength and Conditioning program for NSU back in August 2002. 

Dr. Gaines holds the following professional certifications: NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, CSCCA Strength and Conditioning College Coaches Certification, NSCA Coach Practitioner, NSCA Registered Coach, and He helped NSU receive the Education Recognition Program. Dr. Gaines is also certified as an ACSM Health Fitness Specialist. He also has a certification with the Weightlifting Sports Performance Certification. 

Dr. Gaines is currently the NSCA Virginia State Director, and he has been the state director since 2001. Dr. Gaines is currently the Vice-President of the General Division for the Vahperd Organization (Virginia, Association of Health, PE, Recreation, and Dance. Dr. Gaines is in running for the President-elect position for Vahperd. Dr. Gaines served in 2007 as the secretary of the Virginia Assessment Group. 

In 1995 Dr. Gaines was crowned the 1995 Mr. Virginia Overall Bodybuilding Champion and turned professional in 1998 winning the NGA Hercules International competition in New York City, NY. He won his first professional competition in the WNBF PRO Mr. Universe title in 1999 in Tucson, Arizona. 

In 2004 Dr. Gaines won the 2004 Natural Olympia Fitness Championships. In 2007 Dr. Gaines won his largest title by winning the Master’s “World Bodybuilding Championships in Atlanta, GA, fulfilling his lifetime dream of becoming a World Champion. Dr. Gaines has now started a new strength and conditioning program at Virginia State University, and has the majority of all teams participating in strength and conditioning. 

Dr. Gaines is the first ever strength and conditioning coach at Virginia State University, and he has many goals for the program.
