Pre-College Program in Mathematics, Engineering & Science

Department of Mathematics
Dr. George Wimbush, Director

The Pre-College Program in Mathematics, Engineering and Science is a partnership between Richmond Public Schools, Petersburg Public Schools, and Virginia State University. It is a component of a NSF-funded grant entitled, "Gateway to the 21st Century." E.I. Dupont and Dominion Virginia Power are also major sponsors of this program.

The goal of this program is to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter college with a major in mathematics, engineering, sciences and computer science. During the program, students concentrate on topics to include: Computer Science, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, SAT preparation, probability and Statistics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Students will be exposed to the use of technology through science labs and extensive use of TI-83 and TI-89 Graphing Calculators. The focus of each topic is guided by the use of the Virginia Standards of learning for Mathematics and Science. The students complete short research projects, career awareness seminars and field trips.

The program targets students from grades 9 thru 12. Students who attend the program must be recommended through their schools. The program is held for two weeks in the month of July. Please contact Dr. George Wimbush at (804) 524-5920 or gwimbush@vsu.edu
