The special education teaching force works with 28,000 students with disabilities, according to the 2010-2011 statistical summary on the Pennsylvania Department of Education website. Given the size of this population, the range of educational services required, and changes in federal law, special education teachers are still on "high need" hire lists. In addition to special education certified teachers, the field values students with advanced degrees, since these individuals would be eligible for teacher-leader or administrative positions and maintain currency in the field.
The Department of Special Education at West Chester University is continually growing its capacity to provide both post-baccalaureate certification and Master’s of Education programs by offering the same quality education across increasing venues. To that end, students have a choice in both programs between traditional (face-to-face) courses on the West Chester University campus, fully online courses, and blended (combination of face-to-face and online) courses at our new Philadelphia location.
