Undergraduate Summer Workshops
A Review of Algebra in Preparation for MTH 1450
August 13 - 17, 2012
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics will offer a summer workshop for incoming freshman intending to major in liberal arts and who will be taking MTH 1450 Mathematics and the Modern World as their General Education Area I math requirement.
A Review of Algebra in Preparation for MTH 1450 is designed for incoming freshmen intending to major in the liberal arts who miss a math placement level of 3 by a few points. To be eligible for this workshop, a student must have a math placement score of 2 and an ACT math score of at least 18 (or SAT math score of at least 450). After an intensive review of algebra, these students will be ready for MTH 1450. The department will waive the prerequisite to MTH 1450 for students who complete this workshop as long as they register for MTH 1450 in fall semester 2012.
This workshop will meet for 6 hours daily Monday, August 13 through Friday August 17. The morning session will run from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm and will consist of lectures and group work. The afternoon session will be held in a computer lab from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm and will use an online educational system called ALEKS to enhance student learning of the concepts developed in the morning sessions.
Topics covered in this workshop will include operations with decimals and fractions, percents, order of operations, exponents, evaluating expressions, solving linear equations, problem solving techniques, word problems, modeling, and calculator use. Attendance and full participation in both the morning and afternoon sessions for the entire week is mandatory. Students must pass daily quizzes.
The cost of this workshop will be $150. Please complete the enrollment form below and return it along with a check or money order by Friday, August 3, 2012 to register for this summer workshop.
