Counseling
Students are assigned a counselor who serves as an advisor, advocate and friend. Counselors are in contact with students from the time of entry into program to the time they graduate from the College. Counselors assist students deal with academic and social problems that interfere with their academic goals. Counselors provide:
Program Planning
Registration Monitoring of academic progress
Information on academic policies
Referrals to tutoring services
Information on majors, careers and career trends
Referrals to career placement services
Assistance in regular and on-line FA application
Information on FA eligibility requirements
Information and assistance in applying for stipends, scholarships, and grant aid
Assistance in resolution of personal problems
Referrals to professional services and agencies
Tutoring
Students can receive one to one and group tutoring services in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Economics and many of the core requirement courses. The Student Support Services Program Academic Resource Center assists students to acquire and develop writing, English language, computer and mathematical skills. The center collaborates with other tutoring programs to ensure tutoring for upper-class students. Tutoring is available during semester breaks.
Group workshops in core courses and Math are held daily during the semester. Students can attend these workshops on a "drop-in" basis. The workshops serve to encourage collaborative learning as well as to foster study groups. Group workshops to prepare for CCNY tests are also scheduled during the semester.
Computers are available at the Academic Resource Center for all SSSP students. The computers can be used for word processing, spreadsheet and other applications. Internet access is also available. Academic software is available for assisted instructions.
Enrichment ActivitiesSSSP offers a wide range of enrichment activities for its students. These include:
Workshops on Study Skills techniques, library research, computer literacy, note taking techniques are held each semester at the Academic Resources Center.
These workshops are held early in the semester and are sponsored by the Wellness and Counseling Center.
Each year a Career Exploration workshop is held in October to introduce Student Support Services incoming and continuing students to senior faculty from the Divisions of the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education, Engineering, Sciences, Architecture and the Career Center. Students learn about the academic opportunities, employment trends, research opportunities, and scholarships in their respective fields. Departmental entrance criteria and interdisciplinary possibilities are also discussed. Students are encouraged to ask questions and make follow-up appointments to meet with the faculty.
Financial Aid Workshops are held in collaboration with the financial aid office. Students are informed of Federal (FAFSA) and state (TAP) financial packages, federal work-study information, and on-line web sites for scholarships and loans.
Students participate in a Cultural Program, in December, that enhances student awareness of the diverse backgrounds of the students. Students present works of art, poems and dances that reflect their cultural heritage.
An annual award ceremony is held in May to honor students' academic achievements.
