Volunteer Emergency Squad

Meet the Crew

Hello, my name is Elisaul Diaz (EMT-B). I am a Pre-Med Psychology major. This is my last year at CCNY and VES. I have been volunteering in VES as an EMT since my first semester here. Over the years I have held many different positions including: Crew Chief, Lieutenant, BLS Instructor and Director of VES. Now, in my last year, I am President. I hope to leave this organization in great standing so more students can get the same great opportunity I had in the many years to come. Even though classes, volunteering and work keep me pretty busy, I do take time to enjoy reading a good book, playing video games, and watching movies.

Luke Lukose (EMT-B): An EMT-B for VES for the past 2 years, I plan on pursuing a career in Medicine. I am currently a senior at CCNY and will graduate with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Economics. I became an EMT-B to help people in need and to gain first hand experience with patient care.

Hey there. I am Mark Cavallo (EMT-B), an EMT and Director. I joined VES as a freshman to expand my ability to intervene – to make changes in every person I meet. Since then, I have come a long way. While working in EMS outside of VES puts food on my table, I expect to graduate between 2013-2014 with a B.S. in Biology. My hobbies range from spending time with my closest ones, to spending time trying to increase fitness. I also enjoy taking out time to think for myself--I find it super important! I am very homely, mild-mannered and super confident.

Originally a Criminal Justice major at John Jay College, Andrew Lesce (EMT-B) took the EMT-B course in 2008 and found his passion for Medicine. After transferring into City College, Andrew joined VES in the fall semester of 2009 as an EMT-B. Andrew has set goals of going to Paramedic school and soon after going to medical school to become a Physician. Estimated graduation date: Spring 2013.

Jennifer Zhu (EMT-B) is currently a senior in CCNY. She is majoring in Biology and considering a minor in Asian Studies. After taking the EMT course out of curiosity and obtaining her EMT-B license she decided to apply to VES to put her license to use while serving the CCNY community. She joined VES in Spring 2010. In her free time she enjoys reading, drawing, surfing the web, and pursuing random interests.

Hi! My name is Natalie Marte (EMT-B) and I'm the secretary for the 2011-2012 academic year. I joined VES January 2010 and have been volunteering as a CFR until this year when I became an EMT-B. Hopefully I will graduate in the spring of 2012 with a degree in Biology and a minor in Psychology. When I graduate I hope to leave a little part of me in the office I call home and with the members I call my family.

Hi, my name is Sarah Singh (EMT-B). I am currently in my fourth year as Management and Administration major here at City College. I also participate in a few other clubs on campus including the Guyanese Student Initiative and Peer Health Exchange as well as in a research lab on campus. I will graduate in the Spring 2012 semester.

I have been with VES for the past three years. After entering VES in the Spring 2009 semester as a CFR, I became a member of E-Board as the Secretary. Through VES I was sponsored to become an EMT and a BLS CPR Instructor (so sign up for CPR classes!!!!). I am now a Lieutenant and will be teaching CPR classes in any four hour slot from 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. Thanks for visiting, bye!! :)

Hi, my name is Johnson Ho (EMT-B). I am a fourth-year undergraduate NYS-certified EMT-B studying Biomedical Engineering at the City College of New York, expecting to graduate in June 2012. I was first exposed to the Volunteer Emergency Squad during in August 2008 during my first General Chemistry Workshop in the 10th floor of the Marshak Building. On the first day of workshop, I met Elisaul Diaz, our current 2011-2012 VES President, wearing his full VES attire with badges on his white uniform, navy blue battle-dress unit pants, black boots, and a VES radio. Impressed by his outfit and desirous for a radio and the chance to feel the satisfaction of taking responsibility for protecting students of the City College campus during medical and trauma-related emergency situations, I applied to the organization, interviewed, and was
admitted. Upon entering, VES trained me in CPR and First-Aid. Subsequently, I took an EMT-B certification course during the summer of 2010 and returned to school with a position in VES as an Assistant Crew Chief under the Crew Chief direction of Shakir Saud (Paramedic and 2011 CCNY Masters Graduate).

I am incredibly active on campus. Outside of saving the campus, I compete as a starting middle blocker and sprinter of City College's Division III Varsity Men's Volleyball and Track Teams. Also, I function as a follow-up coordinator with the executive leadership team of CCNY's InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, developing an organizational structure where new and committed members can easily step into a role of service and leadership. Lastly, since I have a real deep-seated passion for interacting with and mentoring undergraduate lower-classmen, this year I have been appointed an "Uber Mentor" by the City Honors Illustrious Mentoring Program to mentor and advise all 126 incoming Honors Freshmen at the City College of New York. When I'm not running around on campus, you can usually find me with a gathering and eating dinner with anywhere from 2 to 20 students in the living room of my dormitory suite. If you're a prospective applicant, feel free to get in contact with me as I personally make it a point to be available to anyone who needs it. If you want to learn more information about me, City College's public relations office wrote a published press release in April 2011 about me and my activities and accomplishments on campus. Good luck. I hope this helps you, and I hope you get in! And when you do, be ready when you hear, "CONGRATULATIONS!"

My name is Andres Frederick (CFR) and I am currently a Senior majoring in Biology and minoring in Psychology at CCNY and my goal is to become both a Teacher and Physician. I love Church, soccer, running and reading.I love to embrace different cultures and learn from them. Excellence, Order, and Discipline is what I want to leave in VES, and after I graduate I know that the future of VES is left in great hands.
My name is Cherry Huang (EMT-B) and I am an Asian Studies major (minor in Biology), coffee enthusiast, book nerd, sinophile, avid snowboarder, occasional blogger, cherries hater (yes, I realize the irony), average guitar player, aspiring doctor, and an emergency medical technician-basic.

I first joined VES in the spring of 2009 because I watched too many episodes of the television medical drama, House, and had an unusual obsession with paddles and yelling, "Clear!" Being a part of VES has not only taught me all the necessary skills and knowledge to being a good first responder, but it has also provided the invaluable experiences of patient interaction. As a result of VES, my love for people and health care (and paddles) has grown and I have learned to appreciate my role as a health care provider.
Hi, I'm Elaine Li (EMT-B) and I became a part of the VES family in the spring of 2009. At first VES was just another activity to put on my resume, but after 2 1/2 years at VES, I feel like it's another part of my life that I really enjoy. I'm now a NYS-certified EMT who plans to go to medical school after I graduate in 2012. Many people are surprised to learn that I'm a French major and biology minor pre-med, but I believe that the undergraduate years are for exploring one's interests, and for me, that's le français. Besides, I will have to deal with many years of sciences ahead, so I may as well have fun now!

Random facts: I'm a proud Hong Kong-nese who loves munching on a Halloween-sized bag of chocolate goodies while watching my favorite soap opera, can finish a whole jar of Nutella within a week, has dreams about buffets, and basically thinks about food 24/7. C'est tout.
My name is Luisa Mera (CFR), I am a Certified First Responder (CFR) that works with the Volunteer Emergency Squad (VES) at the City College of New York. Currently, I am doing a major in Physics and doing a minor in Computer Science. I anticipate graduating in the fall of 2012.  My career goal is to continue on to Graduate School to receive a Masters in Medical Physics.  Besides VES, I am also a part of CCAPP, LAESA, and the Society of Physics Students. I have been in VES since January of 2010 and I hope to continue working in VES in future semesters.
My name is Janelly Eralte (CFR) and I am a junior at City College. I am a biology major who peruses a career in medicine. I am interested in becoming a pediatric surgical physician assistant. Currently, I am a Certified First Rescuer (CFR) in the Volunteer Emergency Squad and have been for the past two years. My goal in VES is to become an EMT and to help as many people as I can while I am here. On my free time, I love to spend time with my family and friends, play volleyball and laser tag.
Tauhid Mahmud (EMT-B) graduated from Bronx Science in 2009 and came to City College with the intention of being a pre-med student. Soon, he had heard about VES and immediately went to join. What drew him to VES was not only the amazing opportunity for Tauhid to serve as a health professional for his fellow classmates but also the homely aura that VES itself exuded. Tucked away in the basement of Shepard Hall, VES greatly appealed to Tauhid since it offered a respite from the controlled chaos that is college and it also offered a group of peers that are hard-working, friendly, and overall great people.

After joining VES, Tauhid became an EMT the next summer. He then went to join other clubs along with VES such as Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society, and the American Red Cross Club at City College. Currently, Tauhid is taking a break from club activities in order to focus his energy on research and studying for the MCAT.
My name is Alejandro Zarate (CFR). This is my fourth year at CCNY. My major is in biology and my minor is in theatre arts. I value the diverse fields of study that my major offers. At the same time, studies in theatre allow me to develop my public-speaking skills; an asset I deem valuable.

I've been in VES, as a CFR, since the start of the fall semester back in 2010. I joined VES as a result of pure gratitude towards CCNY, the school that has given me opportunities since early high school. This is my way of giving back to the school. I must say though, I hit the jackpot when I became part of this team. Long live VES!
My name is Paulina Sayegh (CFR) and I am in my fourth year here at CCNY as an International Studies major, pursuing a career in medicine. One of my favorite hobbies is playing piano! I joined VES in September 2010 and earned my certification as a CFR. One of the main reasons why I joined VES was because of the experience and the knowledge that I would gain. The experience so far has been incredible and very rewarding.
Nida Gulfam (EMT-B) joined Volunteer Emergency Squad in her 3rd Semester of Fall 2010 as a CFR. She is now an EMT. She is a pre-medical student aspiring to be a physician. Her ultimate goal is to help communities eliminate health disparities. She serves as the President of Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) Pre-Health Honor Society. She is an active participant in her community and reaches out to the youth by mentoring high school students. Her hobbies include drawing, horseback riding and shopping.
My name is Michael Moreno (EMT-B). I am a History major concentrating on pre-med as well as researching the history of medicine in the modern era.  I am certified in EMT-B and love emergency medicine.  I plan to become an osteopathic physician in the near future.

My name is Josean Diaz (EMT-B). I am certified as an EMT-Basic. I am majoring in Biology with the intent of getting into Medical School and eventually becoming a Family Physician. I joined VES in the spring of 2011 in search of a way to put my certifications to use, make new friends, and give back to CCNY. I currently work as a Direct Support Professional assisting those who suffer from mild to severe mental conditions. I honestly really enjoy my job. Although it requires a great deal of patience, it allows me to help others and to also support myself throughout these college years!

Dipanjana Das (EMT-B) is a senior at CCNY majoring in Psychology. Born and raised in Kolkata, India, Dipanjana, better known as “Diya”, moved to New York with her parents in 2004. Her first contact with Emergency Services occurred when EMTs were called to help save the life of one of her relatives and Diya has admired their work ever since. This encounter with the EMS inspired her to take an EMT course and join CCNY’s Volunteer Emergency Squad in Spring 2011. Working as an EMT-B, Diya has been able to use this opportunity to get more involved in the school community and provide help through the services VES offers on campus.

Diya is interested in pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology, and hopes one day to be a Psychotherapist. In this scope she also intends to study the role of therapy in the treatment of schizophrenia patients.
My name is William Huang (EMT-B). I have just transferred over to CCNY. This is my second semester at CCNY as well as at VES. Currently I am pursuing a degree in Biology. The world of EMS workers fascinates me because of their ability to risk their lives, in order to save others in times of emergency. I aspire one day to become an emergency medicine physician.
My name is Toni-Ann Ferguson (CFR) and I am a junior at City College. I am an English major, but I am taking the requirements for Pre-med. I joined VES at the beginning of the fall semester of 2011 and I am a CFR. I joined VES because I wanted to gain some experience seeing that I will be pursuing a medical occupation. I believe that VES can give me the experience that I need and can also help me attain the required skills for that area of profession. I am a Christian and I attend Deeper Life World Outreach Ministries, where I am apart of various departments within the church. I also love to play tennis and volleyball.

My name is Samsur Dipti (CFR) and currently I am a junior at CCNY. I am majoring in Biology and minoring in psychology. In the future I hope to attend medical school to get an opportunity to make a difference in somebody’s life. To achieve this goal, I joined the Volunteer Emergency Squad (VES), which provides me with a great deal of exposure and experiences in the field of medicine. I am really glad to be part of this VES family because as a CFR it gives me a chance to provide basic medical care to my fellow students, faculty, staff, and visitors of the CCNY campus.  On my free time I love to dance, listen to music, watch movies, travel and sleep.

My name is Brian Mbamelu (CFR). I was born in New York, but I was raised in Nigeria. I grew up with the dream of being a professional soccer player. As age 9, I joined a developmental soccer academy, where I juggled between the rigorous demands of school and soccer. My strong passion for soccer did not stop me from excelling in school. During m y freshman and sophomore years in high school, I was awarded the runner-up for the best health science student. I graduated high school at the age of 15 and returned to America to pursue my dreams.

On my return to the United States, I discovered that soccer is not as developed as it is in my country. Therefore, health sciences, which used to be a hobby for me, became my career aspiration. Currently, I am in my sophomore year in college with a major in biology/pre-med and a minor in public policy. Last summer, I completed a medical internship at the Columbia University Medical Center. During the last academic year, I worked as a College Assistant at the science library and as a receptionist at the science tutoring center-both at CCNY. Also, I have also been strongly extracurricular activities such as the men’s varsity soccer team, where I received the Athletic-Academic Honor Roll. I recently volunteer at the City College Safety Services as First Responder.  I conduct research at Dr.JerryGuyden’s lab, here at CCNY, where I study T-cell development. I am a Charles Rangel Public Management Fellow who intends to pursue a career in medicine and public health. My future intentions includes providing health care for the underserved population and improving the healthcare system in third-world countries.

Hello everyone!  My name is Marissa Rabadi (CFR). I am currently a junior at CCNY, double majoring in Biology and Spanish. In addition to being a part of the awesome VES crew, I am a member of SSSP and the CCNY Women’s soccer team. I love being active and engaging in trying new things. Traveling and meeting new people also bring enjoyment to my life.
