Position Description and Duties

GENERAL DUTIES

Performs teaching, research, patient care, and guidance duties at The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education in area(s) of expertise noted below.  Responsibilities may also include committee and program-related assignments, administration, supervision, and other functions as assigned.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at The City College of New York (CCNY) is searching for a visionary and energetic leader to Chair its Department of Community Health and Social Medicine (CHASM). The Department plays a critical and leading role in our mission-driven BS/MD program aimed at producing broadly-educated, highly-skilled primary care practitioners to provide quality services to underserved communities. The Sophie Davis School curriculum is centered on a comprehensive effort to educate our students in the social, economic, political, and behavioral determinants of health and disease, with a focus on population health and health care policy. The Department research agenda is centered on chronic disease epidemiology, health behavior, health policy, health services and community based research. The strategic vision for the Department includes: a) an expansion of its current educational mission to incorporate the teaching of additional clinical and clinical methodological skills in the basic science years of the undergraduate and medical student education; and b) strengthening of the current research foci and expansion of its research portfolio to include broader aspects of epidemiology and behavioral medicine, including clinical epidemiology. This expansion would take place by broadening and strengthening collaboration with other academic departments/institutions within and outside CUNY, public health organizations, foundations, and our affiliated clinical centers.

Qualifications and Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

M.D. from an accredited university with specialty board qualifications required with a record of exceptional intellectual, educational and professional achievement. Also required is demonstrated or promised evidence of significant success as a teacher, interest in productive scholarship or creative achievement in the medical field, and willingness to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree and extensive experience in one of the research areas outlined above, with an established and current record of extramurally, peer-reviewed funded research, along with a record of administrative experience. In addition he/she must have a thorough understanding and appreciation of the value of clinical education and practice, especially as it relates to the primary care focus and overarching mission of the School. The record of scholarly accomplishment should be sufficient to support appointment at the rank of Professor here at CCNY. The ideal candidate will have proven outstanding leadership, team building, and organizational skills as well as experience working with diverse groups/students.
