Position Description and Duties
GENERAL DUTIES
Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.
- Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding

CONTRACT TITLE
Research Associate
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Research Associate will carry out independent research in the area of interfacial phenomena. Specifically, the research associate will be responsible for conducting experiments related to the measurement of particle size, interfacial tension, spectroscopy, rheology of colloidal suspensions, and emulsion stability, and thermal characterization of materials. This Research Associate will also interface with the Nanofabrication facility in the Engineering School as well as the corresponding facility in the school of science. Additionally, the Research Associate will help coordinate research collaborations with other labs through correspondence, reagent acquisition or shipments, and participate in meetings with investigators from other labs to discuss protocols and data and coordinate joint experiments. Develop and write first author manuscripts reporting results of independent projects. Pursue independent grant funding. Perform supervisory responsibilities for research technicians assigned to group and help orient and train new personnel in lab safety and experimental procedures. Perform duties related to lab organization and management.
Maintain and operate the particle size analyzers, pendant drop apparatus, thermal analysis and rheometers, infrared and fluorescence spectrometers, various Langmuir troughs and surface preparation equipment that currently reside within the department. The person will also be responsible for maintaining a scheduling and usage calendar, as well as training students to use various pieces of equipment. Interfacing equipment with computers and having general skills in electronics, mechanics, and programming will be a significant value to the position.

Qualifications and RequirementsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in chemical engineering, materials science or engineering, physics, or physical chemistry with 3 years lab experience and an outstanding record of accomplishment preferred. Experience in surface, interface, and materials characterization is required.
Other preferred skills include excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; fluent in English with excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently, design experiments, and analyze data; computer skills; detail-oriented; and a positive attitude towards learning new procedures and research protocols.
Preference will be given to candidates with a record of innovative project contributions including peer-reviewed publications and grant funding.
