Position Description and Duties

GENERAL DUTIES

Conducts academic research in connection with CUNY programs; may assist faculty, staff, and students in conducting research and lead research efforts involving others.

- Develops research plans and proposals and participates in acquiring funding

- Collects, analyzes, and assures validity of data

- Writes progress reports; writes and publishes findings

- Collaborates with internal and external colleagues

- Adheres to standards for safety and hygiene and ethical conduct as defined by the University and relevant outside parties

CONTRACT TITLE

Research Associate

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The Research Associate will work in the Chemical Engineering department and will carry out independent research in the area of materials science and engineering. Specifically, the research associate will be responsible for conducting experiments related to the microscopic characterization including but not limited to electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and scanning probe microscopy. This Research Associate will also interface with the Microscopy core facilities in the division of science as well as the microscopy facilities in the structural biology center. Additionally, the Research Associate will help coordinate research collaborations with other labs through correspondence, reagent acquisition or shipments, and participate in meetings with investigators from other labs to discuss protocols and data and coordinate joint experiments. Develop and write first author manuscripts reporting results of independent projects. Pursue independent grant funding. Perform supervisory responsibilities for research technicians assigned to group and help orient and train new personnel in lab safety and experimental procedures. Perform duties related to lab organization and management.

Research duties include:
Maintain and operate the various microscopes that currently reside within the department including confocal, electron, scanning probe, and optical. The person will also be responsible for maintaining a scheduling and usage calendar, as well as training students to use various equipment. Interfacing equipment with computers and having general skills in electronics, mechanics, and programming will be a significant value to the position.

Qualifications and Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Doctoral Degree in a related field and demonstrated research ability.

Ph.D. in chemical engineering, materials science or engineering, physical chemistry or
physics, with minimum of 3 years lab experience and an outstanding record of accomplishment. Experience in microscopy is required. Other required skills include excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; fluent in English with excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently, design experiments, and analyze data; computer skills; detail-oriented; and a positive attitude towards learning new procedures and research protocols.

Preference will be given to candidates with record of innovative project contributions including peer-reviewed publications and grant funding.
