Nilaja Sun has joined our Advisory Board!
Nilaja Sun is an actor, playwright and teaching artist most known for her Obie awardwinning solo piece "No Child..." which had its initial off Broadway run at the Barrow Street Theatre from July 2006-June 2007 and was recently revived there in an extended run. For her creation and performance of No Child... and its subsequent national tour, Nilaja garnered 21 awards including: an Obie Award, a Lucille Lortel Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards including the John Gassner Playwriting Award for Outstanding New American Play, a Theatre World Award, the Helen Hayes Award, two NAACP TheatreAwards, and was named the Best One-Person Show at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen.
We are thrilled to have her artistic voice join our team to help move our program forward and remain true to its core values of Pedagogy, Artistry and Advocacy!

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM
This program seeks to educate candidates to be exemplary theatre educators who can lead theatre classes at all levels (K-12), integrate theatre studies into the classroom and general school curriculum, and work with a diverse population of students in a variety of educational settings, including schools and community agencies. The program endeavors to prepare candidates to do work that both enriches participants' lives and provides them with the skills necessary to realize performances.
The program will provide students with the training, knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to be successful as:
- theatre classroom teachers (grades K-12)
- classroom teachers who desire to integrate theatre into their curriculum for content knowledge and literacy development
- teaching artists
- theatre resource personnel working out of professional theatres and arts institutes
Graduate Programs:

Stream A: 37-46* credits
M.S.ED degree in Educational Theatre with Initial Certification in Theatre for grades Pre K-12

Stream B: 34 credits
leading to M.S.ED degree in Educational Theatre, Professional Certification in Initial Certification area, and Initial certification in Theatre Pre K-12

STREAM C: 31 credits
Professional Certification in Educational Theatre for candidates who hold initial certification in Theatre and have three years teaching experience. This stream will provide requisite advanced coursework in Educational Theatre and all requisite content pedagogy courses for professional certification. No student teaching is required.

STREAM D: 34 credits
M.S.ED Educational Theatre

STREAM E: 21 credits
Initial Certification Theatre Extension for candidates who are currently enrolled in, or have completed the M.A. in Applied Theatre at Creative Arts Team (CAT)/School of Professional Studies (SPS) CUNY or an equivalent degree, who wish to be initially certified in theatre. These candidates do not currently hold any certification.

The graduate program provides opportunities for students to work with the Creative Arts Team (CAT), Lincoln Center Institute (LCI) and Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC).
These unique partnerships will allow students to take elective courses with the School of Professional Studies MA in Applied Theatre, work with LCI teaching artists within their CCNY courses and work in a mentorship capacity with the Education Program at MTC.
