Graduate Studies in Secondary Science

CCNY offers three options for those interested in a secondary science teacher certification program. Stream A is an initial certification plus Master's degree program for teacher candidates who do not have certification or a Masters Degree.  Stream B is a professional certification plus Master's degree program for teachers who already have an initial certificate. Stream C is for teacher candidates who already have a Masters Degree but no certification.

All program changes must be requested and approved in writing.

Stream A: Master of Arts Degree in Science Education, Initial Certification

This degree is intended for individuals with a background in science but without any certification or Masters degree.

Entrance requirements: 

• satisfactory completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics (or the equivalent)
• three supporting letters of recommendation.

Stream B: Master of Arts Degree in Science Education, Professional Certification

This degree is primarily intended for teachers with an initial certification seeking a Masters degree and professional certification.

Entrance requirements: 

• satisfactory completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics (or the equivalent)
• initial certification in Secondary Science
• three supporting letters of recommendation.

Stream C: Initial Certification

This degree is primarily intended for individuals with a background in science interested in initial certification but not a Masters degree.

Entrance requirements: 

• satisfactory completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics (or the equivalent)
• satisfactory completion of a Masters Degree in Science or Science Education
• three supporting letters of recommendation.

Stream D: Master of Arts Degree in Science Education, Initial Certification: Transitional B Option

This degree is intended for individuals with a background in science but without any certification or Masters Degree and want to be certified in the classroom as soon as possible. Candidates must be part of existing Transitional B programs such as New York City Teaching Fellows.
