History Department

Welcome to the History Department

We are a community of scholars dedicated to producing and sharing knowledge about the past.  For more than one hundred fifty years, the department has introduced students to the process of historical thinking, providing the foundation of broad, liberal education for an informed citizenry.

History offers one of the most flexible, wide-ranging programs at the College.  Its breadth of outlook and coverage and its stress on learning how to read critically and write effectively help students make sense of a complicated world.  Whether you join us as a major or simply as an interested student, you will develop skills that enable you to succeed in a wide array of fields.  Former students teach in some of the country's most prestigious liberal arts colleges and research universities, lead major law firms, and work as actors, doctors, journalists, museum curators, as well as secondary school teachers.
