Policies

The goals of The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education are designed to attract students who bring special intellectual and personal qualities to their studies. Academically qualified students who also demonstrate the maturity, integrity, compassion and motivation needed to become dedicated and highly skilled professionals are those most likely to succeed in the program.

One of the most important factors considered in the admissions process is the applicant's potential for and interest in pursuing a career as a primary care physician or dentist in medically underserved urban areas. The overall assessment of the applicants by the Admissions Committee includes:

• Academic ability as demonstrated by high school grades and Regents examination scores in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and 11th-year Mathematics and the ACT exam.
• SAT scores (to be submitted with the application.)
• Personal attributes such as initiative and responsibility.
• Interest in working with people as evidenced by health care-related experiences and participation in community and extracurricular activities.

Following a careful initial screening, the most highly qualified applicants are invited for personal interviews. The Admissions Committee makes the final selection of the students admitted for the Fall semester each year from among those interviewed.

Requirements

To be considered for September admission to The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, an applicant must:

• be a resident of New York State and a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
• be a high school graduate as of September 1
• have a minimum grade average of 85 percent through the first three years of high school
• take an entrance exam (ACT & CUNY Math test)
• submit SAT scores; and
• have completed no more than one college semester by the end of the Fall semester. (NOTE: College credits earned prior to high school graduation are not counted for this purpose.)

If you have taken college courses for which you wish to be considered for credit, you must submit a copy of the official college transcript with your application.

Application Requirements
Each applicant must submit two separate applications:

• An application for admission to The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education (a BS-MD or BS-DDS application - applicants may not apply to both)
• An application for admission to the City University of New York (CUNY).
  If applying to CUNY Honors, submit an Honors application and a Sophie Davis application only.

The application to The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education must be postmarked by January 9, 2012.

On the CUNY application, students must list the School of Biomedical Education at City College (Code Number 0179) as a choice. The application to the City University of New York should be postmarked by January 9, 2012.

  All prospective applicants are required to complete a Sophie Davis Interest Page and become a VIP member.  To become a SD VIP click here the “Request More Information”  link on the main menu on http://med.cuny.edu, fill in the information requested, select your  interests in the School and create a VIP log-in password.  You will then be able to access your VIP page to receive updates about your application.
