Peters

Fayola Peters is a 2008 Sophie and Leonard Davis Scholarship Winner

Ms. Peters came to the United States after completing high school in 2004 in her native Trinidad. The 2004 Anjuman Sunaat Jamat Association Girls College alumna made a flawless transition into the Sophie Davis program.

Among her honors are inclusion on the Dean’s List and a scholarship from The Coalition of One Hundred Black Women’s Role Model Program. The program pairs students with professionals. Under the scholarship Ms. Peters was mentored by an OB/GYN physician at Bellevue Hospital, which she says was a tremendous experience. Her mentor inspired her to strive for success and pursue her goal of becoming the first medical doctor in her family.

Ms. Peters participates in a number of activities. She has volunteered at the campus daycare center and with New York Cares. As an active member of the Student National Medical Association, she took part in their tutoring program in collaboration with the Gateway Program at A. Phillip Randolph High School.

Ms. Peters is also a member of CCNY’s Caribbean Students Association. To help meet her college expenses, the Brooklyn resident works part time during college either in retail or through the work/study program.

She will transfer to New York Medical College in 2010.
