Undergraduate Programs

The Chemistry Department offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemistry.

Those who pursue the B.S. most often plan to go into advanced study, governmental service, the health professions, or secondary school education.

Chemistry majors choose to study one of the four concentrations; each one has a tailored curriculum to follow. For the requirements please visit the Degree Requirements page, or contact the listed professor.

Standard Chemistry
Prof. John Lombardi, Marshak 1119, 212-650-6032

Biochemistry
Prof. Themis Lazaridis, Marshak 1338, 212-650-8364

Environmental Chemistry
Prof. John Lombardi, Marshak 1119, 212-650-6032

Chemistry for Secondary Education*
Prof. John Lombardi, Marshak 1119, 212-650-6032
Prof. Richard Steinberg, NA /205B, 212-650-5617

*Students who choose Chemistry for Secondary Education must see Prof. Lombardi for major advising and Prof. Steinberg to declare the minor in Education.

American Chemical Society Certification

Majors in each concentration may take additional courses to receive certification from the American Chemical Society

ACS Certification shows that a Chemistry graduate has a standardized, broad-based knowledge of all the fields of Chemistry. According to the ACS, certification "gives a student an identity as a chemist and helps in the transition from undergraduate studies to professional studies or employment."

The necessary courses are listed on each program page after the regular B.S. requirements.

Chemistry Minor
Requirements for the Minor can be found in the draft online CCNY bulletin, here.

Student Research

It is highly recommended that students choose Honors Research or Independent Studies as their electives.  Research in a faculty laboratory is an invaluable experience.  To learn how to participate, see the Student Research page for details.

Baskerville Chemical Society

The Baskerville Chemical Society (BCS) is the student club for all Chemistry majors at CCNY.  The BCS holds many events throughout the semester and participates in some activities of the Chemistry Department.  Most notably, BCS and the department stage the Chemistry Awards Ceremony every Spring, in which awards are presented to outstanding Chemistry students.

To join, email BCS.
