International Students

Applicants with foreign credentials equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an American college or university may be admitted to the Post Baccalaureate Premedical Program. US medical schools, however, prefer applicants who received their undergraduate training, especially in premedical sciences, from institutions of higher education in the United States. In many cases it may be necessary for international students to complete a bachelor’s degree in the United States before applying to medical school. All international students should be aware that they may need to repeat previous work in the sciences and usually complete at least one year of college English.

Applicants who are not native English speakers must also take the English Placement Examination and some students may be required to complete coursework in English before being allowed to begin a premedical curriculum.

No federal financial aid is available for students who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States to offset the tuition costs and fees for either post-baccalaureate programs or professional programs -- i.e., medical, dental, osteopathic, veterinary, podiatric or optometry schools.

Less than 1% of international students – those who are in this country on a F1 visa – are accepted to American medical schools. Given such a small percentage of acceptance, international students are strongly encouraged to consider other career choices in the allied health professions.
