Program Director: Professor Maria Tamargo, Dept of Chemistry

Dates: July 5 to July 26, 2013

Credits: 6 (for STEM majors only)

Host institution: Universidad de La Habana

Academic Program

The Seminars of Advanced Studies of Molecular Design and Bioinformatics (SEADIM) (pdf) are a continuation of the Iberoamerican Schools of Computational Chemistry and Molecular Design (Havana, 1996, 1998). They have been held by the Laboratory of Computational and Theoretical Chemistry (LQCT) in the University of Havana, Cuba, with the attendance of young researchers, mostly from Iberoamerican countries.

Treating energy recovery from natural and man managed sources is of fundamental importance. Physics, chemistry and biology play a key role with many applications to life and materials sciences, and environmental research. Designing devices at molecular, i.e. nanometric scales, is of fundamental importance for a sustainable future of mankind. The 2013’s SEADIM courses and conferences plan to go deep in this field.

Intensive courses of SEADIM 9 will take place from July 7 to 9 in the “San Gerónimo” University College of Havana. Scientific sessions will take place between July 10 and 12, 2013 at a location in the Varadero beach resort, and consist in invited plenary lectures and posters.

CHEM 31111: Synthesis of Nanomaterials for Practical Applications (3 CCNY credits)
This course will present an introduction to nanomaterials and describe some of the most common methods for their synthesis. Applications such as solar cells, electronic devices and biological labeling, will be discussed.

CHEM 31112: Introduction to Modeling and Uses of New Nanomaterials (3 CCNY credits)
This course will describe some of the mathematical approaches used to model and describe the properties of nanomaterials, with an emphasis on how these models may assist to understand and enhance the uses of nanomaterials.
