Content Analysis of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Themes in Time Magazine: November 2006 – April 2007
Presented in October 2007 at the Einsteins in the City 2 International Student Research Conference at The City College of New York (Faculty Advisor: Margaret Rosario, Ph.D.)
First content analysis of popular news magazines specifically addressing lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) issues
Articles (n=11) from Time magazine over a six month period were coded on over 80 variables
Six major categories emerged, including pop culture, gay marriage, religion, politics, science and gays in the military
Analyses suggest that sample articles predominately portrayed LGB positively
Future research will include additional analyses of Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report over the same period, as well analysis of LGB-related news articles over a similar six month period from November 1996 through April 1997
Anticipated presentation of full longitudinal analysis at the 2008 APA Convention in Boston
