Information for Graduating Students
Nominate a Graduating Senior for Commencement Speaker.
Please consider nominating a graduating senior to be this year's Commencement Student Speaker, or if you are a graduating senior, nominating yourself. Please do not offer any explanation to support your nomination - send an email to dmilstone@umassd.edu with the student's name no later than Wednesday, March 2, 2011.
This year we are selecting the undergraduate commencement student speaker in a new way. On the recommendation of the Commencement Committee, the Chancellor authorized a process in which graduating seniors are either nominated by a faculty member, staff member, or another graduating senior, or may self-nominate. Nominated students will then receive a letter encouraging them to complete an application that describes their academic and community contributions and accomplishments as well as an abstract (short summary and outline) of what they would like to address in a speech.
A committee compromised of three faculty members, three administrators, two students leaders, and Dr. David Milstone will review the applications and recommend approximately 6-8 finalists. Each finalist will then be invited to write and submit their entire speech and also to present their speech to the committee. From this process, the Commencement Student Speaker will be selected. The selected student will then be offered the opportunity to enhance his/her speech with the assistance of faculty members with expertise in writing and public speaking.
