Leading for Learning: a Principal/Assistant Principal Initial Licensure program

The purpose of this unique and comprehensive program is to enhance the leadership potential of classroom teachers and build the next generation of outstanding school principals/assistant principals who will ensure that every child achieves academic excellence, develops critical thinking skills, and develops his or her potential.

Benefits for program candidates

  • Endorsement to receive an initial Principal or Assistant Principal Administrator License
  • Receive a post-Master Certificate in Organizational Leadership with the completion of two additional business courses
  • Have the advantage of district and collegial support in addition to a network of their peers from other districts
  • Learn from and work with practitioners from various districts during the program and the ongoing, on-site support of the UMass Dartmouth School Leaders Network

Advantages of School/District Partnerships

  • A long-term strategy to develop a pipeline of principals for the foreseeable future
  • Nomination of promising principal candidates who would commit to completion of the program and to future service in their district
  • Commitment to support the candidates as policies and contracts allow. Support can be provided in the form of flexible time, tuition support, mentors, program faculty, portfolio coaches, and pre-practicum and practicum sites
  • Benefit from the steady pool of well-prepared candidates who are already familiar with district policies, programs and procedures.

Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Communications and Literacy Skills section of the MTEL test for teacher licensure.
  • Completed UMass Dartmouth Graduate Certificate Program application with official transcripts, MTEL results, proof of degree obtainment and any relevant coursework from other accredited universities
  • Professional resume
  • Letter from Superintendent or CEO attesting to the applicant's attainment of three years of teaching or other executive leadership position.
  • A personal interview with the Leading for Learning Program Coordinator

Leading for Learning Principal and Assistant Principal Licensure Program is a practitioner-focused program developed by the Center for University, School and Community Partnerships, the Charlton College of Business, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Education Department and the SouthCoast Education Compact.
