What makes TEACH! unique?

TEACH! is an innovative, accelerated, alternative teacher preparation program that guides participants toward earning Massachusetts initial licensure, specifically, to teach middle or high school math or science in an urban school district. Prior to earning licensure, participants in the program can either serve as teacher apprentices, or as full-time working teachers ("teachers of record"). Candidates who choose to serve as apprentices are guaranteed future job interviews after they complete the program.

  • Full-time, one-year program

  • Free MTEL preparation

  • Substantial scholarships
  • Convenient course scheduling around the school district calender

  • Opportunity to integrate course work into teaching practice

  • Opportunity to learn from experienced instructors and practitioners from TEACH! partner schools

  • Opportunity to participate in an e-mentoring and onsite New Teacher Support Network for 2-3 years

Who Should Apply?

  • Career changers who have professional experiences relevant to math or science

  • College seniors or recent graduates in the arts and sciences or business

  • Diverse candidates are strongly encouraged to apply

The Application Process

  1. Attend a TEACH! Information Session

  2. Complete a UMass Dartmouth Graduate Certificate Program Application

  3. Required Essay: Submit an essay describing your professional goals and your commitment to teaching in an urban middle or high school

  4. Application Fee: $40.00 payable to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth

  5. Upon notice of preliminary acceptance by the TEACH! Program Director, submit:

    • MTEL program exam scores

    • Two recent letters of recommendation (one of which addresses either your experience or potential to work with middle or high school populations)

    • Proof of a completed bachelor's degree (official transcript) from an accredited institution of higher education with a GPA of 2.75 or higher
