Welcome to the Gardens, Plants Collections and Campus Landscape Beautification Projects at the UMass Dartmouth Campus

Most of the gardens and plantings presented here were developed through cooperative, cross-disciplinary efforts of faculty and students, with input from the UMD Landscape Committee, the campus community, the University Administration, and with critical support and cooperation from Facilities and Grounds staff. Through the integration of campus landscape design and installation into the academic curriculum in art education, biology and sociology, our students have the opportunity to make significant and lasting contributions to the community, which serves them. All those who use or visit our campus landscapes are the beneficiaries of their efforts. The processes of group design and installation as well as the final product of these efforts are presented here.

Take a virtual tour of the campus landscape with the Map and Index of Gardens. Click on one of the green buttons on the map, or on the name of the garden, and observe what coordinated, cooperative efforts can achieve. Visit the Species Index to view pictures and descriptions of many of the hundreds of plants listed for our plantings, and those of the natural campus vegetation. We will continue to work with and share teaching and design methods that involve a complexly structured community in informed participation in shaping our environment and making it a more human, more natural, more inspiring place in which to learn and work.
