Collaborative Research Incentive Program
The Collaborative Research Program supports collaborative research initiatives that will attract extramural funding from sponsors supporting the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Designed to increase extramural funding in the College by increasing the number of collaborative, cross-disciplinary proposals in the College and University, the program provides $8,000 in direct expenses to each member of a team of researchers to write a collaborative proposal to a federal funding agency, foundation, or other appropriate sponsor. Within 12 months of the period of support, participants will complete and submit a research grant application with full indirect costs, salary support, and graduate research assistant support, as permitted by the agency or foundation and as appropriate for the discipline. Collaborative Research incentive funding may be requested for a single year only.
Full-time humanities, social sciences, and sciences faculty members are eligible to apply. Award winners will be invited to present at an A&S Research Forum.
Each member of the research team would receive up to $8,000 in direct expenses. Direct expenses may include academic year buyouts at the full buyout rate, summer salary, graduate research assistant support, or research expenses.
Preliminary information about the intended application and an initial budget must be submitted by January 16, 2013 (send to email@example.com). Preliminary information must include the title of the intended incentive program, name/department of PI, name(s)/department(s) of Co-PI(s), and a tentative project title. A detailed preliminary budget (in Excel or Coeus PDF format) is also required. Full applications will not be accepted unless this requirement met.
Applications will be accepted by the College beginning January 9 and will remain open until 5 pm February 6, 2013.
Applications will be reviewed by the College Area Planning Groups for each disciplinary cluster, who will recommend to the Dean, who will make final awards.
A&S Collaborative Research Award Application Guidelines
Preliminary information & an initial budget are due no later than 5 pm January 16, 2013. Full applications will not be accepted unless this requirement met.
Applications must be comprehensible to non-specialists and emphasize the importance of the area of investigation. The application must contain the following sections and be presented in 11-point Times/Times Roman or Arial, single spaced, with 1" margins.
- Cover Page Use the Cover Page PDF on this site; obtain necessary signatures. For collaborations across multiple departments, approval must be obtained from the chair of each department represented.
- Summary (one page maximum): provide an overview of the purpose and main procedures of the project.
Research Project Description (two pages maximum): describe the significance, purpose, and contribution of the research to the discipline; provide a statement of the hypothesis to be tested, if appropriate, a description of the methods and procedures.
- Provide a bibliography of references relevant to the research proposed.
Funding Sources (one page maximum): Identify the external funding agency to which the proposal will be targeted. What is the fit between the proposal and agency? What are other possible sources of support?
- Sustainability (one page maximum): How does this project create a sustainable research agenda for the participants? What are the prospects for continued funding of this line of research?
- Budget: a detailed budget (in Excel or Coeus PDF format) for all planned expenditures, including salary support.
The grant application must be submitted no later than 12 months after the period of supported activity. Proposals must have full indirect costs when permitted by the funding agency.
Funding decisions will be based on the following criteria: project description, significance, fundability, methods & approach, sustainability, collaboration, and appropriate budget. Proposals will be evaluated by College Area Planning Groups for each disciplinary cluster; recommendations will be presented to the Dean, who will make final awards.
All award decisions are final. All awards are subject to the availability of funds. The right to not fund awards in any or all categories or to cease offering these awards at any time is reserved, as is the right to partially fund proposals for less than the amount requested. Normally, funds awarded should be expended by the end of the fiscal year in which the research is conducted. For spring 2013 incentives, funds should typically be spent by June 30, 2014.
