Graduation- What Students Need to Do
In order to be considered for graduation, students must apply.
(Review for graduation is not automatic and must be initiated by the student.) Students should monitor their progress towards degree completion annually using the KAPS or GPS degree audit systems available through FLASHLINE. Regular and timely advising with your College academic and faculty advisors is also important. Please be aware that a $200 fee may be incurred for failure to apply by the deadline listed on the Registrar's web site.
Students must have at least 70 earned hours to apply for graduation It is better to apply too early rather than too late (do not wait until you are in your last semester or two of coursework to apply for graduation). To apply, access the online graduation application by:
- Logging into FlashLine; then click on the Student Tools and Courses tab.
- In the Graduation Planning Tools channel, click on the Application for Graduation link.
- Review and acknowledge the Important Information Concerning Your Graduation Application page.
- Select and submit your curriculum.
- Select and submit your graduation term. Please carefully review this step, paying particular attention to the year.
- Review all of your information for accuracy and submit your request.
- Print the Graduation Application Acknowledgment page for your records.

Be aware that the application process for graduation and the official review for completion of degree requirements (based in each college) is separate and not related to the commencement ceremony. Information on the commencement event can be found at http://www.kent.edu/commencement/index.cfm; questions on the commencement ceremony itself (RSVP'ing, tickets, deadlines) should be directed to the Commencement office at email@example.com. Be mindful of all deadlines (found on the Registrar's website and the Commencement website).
College of Arts and Sciences Evaluation Process Overview
Once you have applied for graduation, advisors will evaluate your requirements when you have preregistered for the final semester of needed coursework. To expedite the evaluation process, it is necessary for you to schedule classes as early as possible for the final semester. It may take some time before you are notified of your graduation status from the College, since applications are accepted before the evaluation process begins. Students will be notified via their official Kent State University email account if the application was accepted or denied. If the application is denied, remaining requirements will be outlined. It will then be necessary to reapply for a future graduation since applications are only valid for one graduation term—that is, applications are not automatically rolled to the next graduation. If a student is approved for graduation, the Commencement Office will send further communications directly to you regarding commencement, including instructions on how to RSVP (required) to attend the ceremony and the Graduation Fair.
It is the responsibility of the student to understand remaining degree requirements and schedule final courses appropriately. If there is any uncertainty, students may schedule an advising appointment with a college advisor, consult with a faculty advisor if major requirements are in question, and refer to their degree audit (KAPS or GPS) which can be accessed through FlashLine.
Graduation Reapplication Process and Deadlines
If an application is denied or if a student is removed from graduation because all requirements were not completed, it is necessary for the student to reapply for a future graduation since applications are only valid for one term and not automatically rolled to the next graduation. To reapply before the application deadline, follow the same process listed above. If reapplying after the application deadline has passed, it will be necessary to complete the Late Application for Graduation which is found in the Apply for Graduation box under Student Tools and Courses in FlashLine. The late application is not submitted electronically—it must be returned to the College undergraduate advising office in 105 Bowman Hall or faxed to (330) 672-2646. (Be aware that the College has a deadline for late applications; call 330-672-2062 for more information.)
Late Graduation Applications
If a student's first application for graduation is not submitted electronically by the dates listed above, a $200 late application fee may be charged. To apply after the deadline, complete the Late Application for Graduation form which is found in the Apply for Graduation box under Student Tools and Courses in FlashLine. The late application cannot be submitted electronically—it must be returned to 105 Bowman Hall or faxed to (330) 672-2646. Contact the College at 330-672-2062 to determine the deadline for late applications. Students applying late will be notified via email if the $200 late fee has been charged. The College of Arts and Sciences maintains a list of students who have applied on time (before the deadline) and will know if a first time application is late and subject to the late application fee.
