Reading and Writing Development Center (RWDC)

The Reading & Writing Center supports K-12 literacy education throughout NE Ohio. Professional development support activities coordinated through the Center include the annual KSU-U Akron Reading Conference and an off-campus cohort-based series of Reading Endorsement courses offered at various locations throughout NE Ohio. The Center also offers services to children, grades 2-12, who are experiencing difficulty in reading. Tutors and diagnosticians are teachers who are pursuing graduate coursework in reading.

TESTING
During the academic year, children are tested in an effort to determine the nature of their reading problems. Testing sessions are followed up with a reporting letter to parents that provides information about the tests, the child's scores, and the meaning of the results. Written recommendations, based on test results, are given for the home and school. After viewing the report, parents may request that a copy be sent to the child's teacher. Testing takes place on one Saturday per semester. Cost is $50.00. Fee reductions may be made in cases of extreme financial difficulty.

TUTORING
During the summer, the Center sponsors a 5-week tutoring program in reading (Monday through Thursday, 1 1/2 hours per day). Tutoring is done on a 2-1 basis -- 1 tutor for 2 children of the same age/grade/ability. At the end of the program, parents are sent a reporting letter indicating their child's progress. Cost of the tutoring program is $100.00. Fee reductions may be made in cases of extreme financial difficulty.
