Graduate Program in Chemical Physics (CPIP)

Program Description:

If you want to learn about opportunities for graduate study at the Liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State, you've come to the right place. We offer both masters and Ph.D. options in Chemical Physics. These programs focus on liquid crystal science, an exciting interdisciplinary field open to students with backgrounds in either physics or chemistry.

Distinctions:

Our program is unique in its curriculum which is closely focused in soft matter physics/chemistry including both fundamental basic science and cutting-edge applications. Our students are thus uniquely qualified for careers in R&D related to liquid crystal science.  A particular strength of our program is the intense focus on research involvement for students beginning in year 1.

Spotlight on Alumni:

Our alumni achieve remarkable success in both academia and in private industry.
Dr. Asad Khan was recently promoted to Chief Technical Officer at Kent Displays, Inc.
Dr. Greg Crawford was recently appointed Dean, College of Science, at Notre Dame University.
Prof. Ivan Smalyukh serves as an assistant professor of Physics at the University of Colorado and has emerged as one of the leaders of his generation of liquid crystal researchers. His work was honored with a prestigious CAREER award from NSF.
Dr. Mingxia Gu is a display engineer at Apple, Inc.

The Chemical Physics Interdisciplinary Program, like the LCI as a whole, contributes to economic development in Northeast Ohio by training young scientists to work in local high-tech industry. Both in their work at the LCI and in their subsequent careers, these young scientists promote the development of novel technologies that improve the quality of life for the residents of Ohio, the nation, and the world.
