Graduate Program in Geography

Master's Program Description:

The Department of Geography at Kent State University has three focused research areas that include global studies, extreme environment and geospatial technology. Graduates from our M.A. and Ph.D. programs have been employed by federal/state/local governmental agencies as well as private consulting companies. In addition, alumni of our graduate programs have taken on positions across a wide spectrum of employment sectors, ranging from school/university teachers to lawyers, dentists, and physicians.

This year, we are holding the 32nd Applied Geography Conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The significance of this conference series lies in the foresight that John had during a time that scholars in Geography typically downplayed applied research. Over time, Geography, especially with the proliferation of geospatial technology, has grown on applied works that made direct contributions to our society and the world. Kent State Geography has long been recognized as an applied geography department. We have housed editorships of several journals that focused on applied research. Currently, we organize the annual Applied Geography Conferences that draw participants from all over the world, both academics and practitioners.

Spotlight on Alumni:

Dr. John Frazier has made significant impacts in our discipline. Upon receiving his PhD in Geography from Kent State University, John went on to SUNY at Binghamton as an untenured department Chair and brought that department back to prosperity. With then KSU Geography Chair, Bart Epstein, John started the first annual Applied Geography Conference in 1978.
