Psychology and Pre-Medicine/Pre-Osteopathy

Students at Kent State can choose a Pre-Medicine/Pre-Osteopathy program, a pre-professional advising program that provides students with an opportunity to prepare for admission to medical school. Students in this program take courses that prepare them for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and that serve as preparation for coursework in medical school. Students who choose this path can pair the pre-medicine curriculum with a bachelor's degree program in the College of Arts and Sciences. Many students choose to pair the pre-medicine curriculum with a major in psychology. This can be particularly beneficial if you are interested in a medical career in psychiatry, pediatrics, among others.

In psychology, we have many courses that could be beneficial to pre-med students including Abnormal Psychology, Health Psychology, Drugs and Behavior, Biopsychology and others.  Potential benefits of majoring in psychology as a premed student include:

  • Opportunities for research experience in health psychology, clinical psychology, biopsychology and related fields.
  • Coursework in psychology can help you understand patients, develop empathy, and learn about how mental disorders may play a role in treatment adherence.
  • Provide opportunities to learn about the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
  • Extensive coursework focused on child growth and development.

If you are interested in learning more, contact Dr. Jill Folk (, the pre-med advisor in psychology.
