Information for Prospective Students

IMAGE: Knee Taping The Kent State University Athletic Training Program (ATP) has a long and distinguished history. With the dawn of accreditation, the program continued to stand as a leader in the professional preparation of athletic trainers in the state of Ohio due in no small part to the exemplary leadership of long-time head athletic trainer Mr. John Faulstick, who retired in 2009 and Dr. Kimberly Peer who started the program in 1999.
The program was granted initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in 2002. Since that time, the program has continued to excel boasting a first time national certification exam pass rate well above the national average and a high graduate level placement average. As of 2006, the ATP is currently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
Kent State University’s ATP continues to grow. Currently, there are 6 academic faculty and 6 clinical faculty members that teach and supervise clinical education experiences for the program with additional affiliate sites at surrounding high schools and clinics rounding out the clinical education component.  The ATP also has 4 teaching assistants and 1 research assistant within academics and 5 graduate assistants within athletics.  In total, Kent State has over 20 on-campus ATs that are able to provide guidance, skills, and knowledge to help develop our athletic training students.  This is one of the largest AT staffs associated with an ATEP in the country.
Didactically, Kent State University’s ATP offers a challenging curriculum preparing students for careers in the athletic training profession and related fields. In addition to classroom and laboratory instruction, students engage in individualized competency assessments with the faculty and clinical staff. This one-on-one instruction provides the optimal mix of challenge and support facilitating learning-over-time with an increasing level of difficulty enabling students to master the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to succeed.
