Learn the principles and practice of designing and delivering effective study abroad progragms with an intercultural emphasis
Participants in this workshop will experience two of Kent State University's study abroad programs – ESL/TEFL in Dresden, Germany and our historic campus in Florence, Italy. Participants in this workshop will observe and interact with students attending summer programs, will study the principles of developing effective study abroad experiences; meet with university program officials, faculty, facility support staff, as well as private third-party providers of study abroad, community and onsite support services such as legal advisors, health professionals and housing offices. Ample time will be spent visiting sites of historical and cultural significance in both Dresden and Florence. A day of independent program-related travel is also built into this program. Travel between Germany and Italy is planned to be on overnight train traveling from Germany, through the Austrian Alps, and arriving in Italy the following day.
Program coordinator and instructor: Dr. Kenneth Cushner is a professor of Multicultural and International Education in the College and Graduate School of Education, Health and Human Services at Kent State University. Dr. Cushner is author or editor of several books and articles in the field of intercultural education and training. A former East-West Center scholar, Dr. Cushner is a founding Fellow and past-president of the International Academy for Intercultural Research, was a Fulbright Scholar to Sweden in 2008, coordinated the Teachers at Sea Program (summers of 2010 and 2011), and currently serves as director of COST - the Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching.
