Assistantships & Practicum

Our students have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in student affairs offices, both at Kent State and in a variety of other types of institutions in the area.

Assistantships

Many HIED students gain valuable work experience and receive help to finance their education through graduate assistantships at colleges and universities throughout northeast Ohio. Assistantships include assignments in various areas of student affairs, such as residence life, greek affairs, and academic advising. Admitted students are invited to campus for a 2-day event in early spring during which they meet other students in the program, interact with faculty, and interview for assistantships. The 2015 event, called GA Days, will be held on March 1-2.  Please note that a number of assistantship sites in the past have wished to conduct second interviews.  We encourage you to make travel arrangements for late Tuesday (March 3) or Wednesday (March 5) to account for this possibility,

To be eligible for a graduate assistantship (GA'ship), you will be required to complete the GA Application; the link to this application will be provided to you upon your admission to the program.

Practicum Fair

The Practicum Fair, sponsored by GRASPP, is held each year in the fall. It features higher education professionals seeking practicum students and provides opportunities for current students to hear a short presentation and talk with prospective site supervisors.

Students in at least their second semester in the program can pursue these internship opportunities. Students can also learn more about the practicum experience through the Practicum Manual.

To apply for a practicum/internship opportunity, please complete the Practicum Application and return to Dr. Thomas, 401-K White Hall or bring to the practicum meeting on the first Friday of the semester you will be doing your practicum/internship.
