Clinical Practicum

The clinical practicum experience at Kent State University allows graduate students to make practical applications of the knowledge and theory gained in the classroom. Students work with a variety of clients, earning clinical clock hours to meet ASHA requirements for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology.

During their first year, students usually work in the Kent State University Speech and Hearing Clinic on campus. Their clients are children and adults who present impairments in articulation, language, voice, fluency, and hearing. Both diagnostic and therapeutic services are provided to clients and their families. The Speech-Language Pathology Clinic averages over 4,000 visits per year.

In the second year of graduate work, students are eligible for clinical externship placements at one or more of our more than 100 affiliated outside agencies, such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, clinics, public schools, and private practices. Other practicum sites, not in the immediate geographic area, are available. All supervisors at each agency are certified and licensed. Frequent contact is made between these supervisors and the Kent faculty. Externship placements can be either full- or part-time and are designed to offer students the experience of assuming clinical responsibility on a continuing basis. We are pleased that outside agencies request that Kent students be placed with them and recognize our students' competence.

One excellent clinical site is the English Language Proficiency Clinic, directed by Dr. Anna Schmidt. This program works with international students, faculty, and members of the community to modify accents in order to enhance intelligibility.

Another external site is the Akron Craniofacial center where students can participate in the inter-disciplinary evaluation of individuals with various maxio-facial anomalies.
