Special Education Teaching Licenses

Initial Teaching Licensure Tracks at the Graduate Level

Teaching is a wonderful and exciting profession. How can you become a licensed teacher in the State of Ohio?  

Teaching Licensure coursework in Special Education is available to students who (a) have an undergraduate degree in something other than education and are seeking initial licensure in special education; (b) are general education teachers seeking initial special education licensure; or (c) are special education teachers seeking an additional area of licensure in a different content area. 

To apply to the Graduate School of Education Health and Human Services, and the Special Education Program, you will apply via the central admissions office and follow the guidelines/online system provided by the Admissions website:

Admissions requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution.
  • An undergraduate cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Official transcripts from all institutions attended (sent directly to Graduate Admissions).
  • A completed  application 
  • A written statement indicating personal and professional goals.
  • Two letters of recommendation from persons who would be familiar with and able to assess the applicant's ability to succeed in graduate studies and work with children and adolescents.
  • Praxis 1

Becoming a Teacher:

Entry into the teaching profession is regulated by law that outlines the requirements and conditions for licensure. In the State of Ohio, the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) stipulates the course content, practicum and student teaching experiences, as well as the various licensure exams required for licensure.

The Special Education Program provides four different licensure areas recognized by ODE for post-baccalaureate students interested in pursuing teaching profession: 

Initial Licensure at the graduate level requires completion of professional preparation in teacher education and special education, student teaching, and the successful completion of the licensure exams outlined by the Ohio Department of Education.
