Music has always been a fundamental part of Michael Martin's life. In fact, Michael's passion for music inspired him to pursue a life-long career in music education. With several teaching awards and a publication in the Journal of Music Teacher Education (2007) under his belt, Michael decided to continue his educational career to acquire a PhD in Music Education at Kent State University.  Michael's decision to attend Kent State was finalized when a graduate assistant opportunity arose.

Publishing in journals and establishing choral programs are two endeavors that Michael plans to accomplish in the future. "Continuing a pursuit of publication, as well as establishing/supporting high quality choral programs," Michael stated as he described his future aspirations.  He also plans to continue his work with educating future music teachers.

Michael is confident that Kent State prepared him for the profession as well as for his current position as the Director of Choral Activities and Music Education at Methodist University. "I feel KSU helped to validate much of what I knew before attending and strengthened the areas that really needed it.  My involvement with teaching (TA) helped to prepare me for the environment of working with professors at the college level," Michael said.  As a doctoral candidate at Kent State, Michael not only had the responsibilities of a student, teaching assistant, and college music program coordinator, but he also was raising a family.  In fact, one of the academic accomplishments Michael's is most proud of was completing his degree while maintaining his role within his family.

Savoring the outdoors and playing Wii with his children are two hobbies that Michael enjoys during his free time.  Michael wishes to provide the following advice for new Kent State graduate students: "When scheduling your time, always schedule time for lunch and dinner, and time for yourself.  During the times when I questioned myself the most, I could look into the eyes of my son and remember why I was doing it in the first place.  Having time for yourself keeps your perspective."
