Senior Honors Thesis

Students who wish to graduate with Honors from the Kent State University Honors College must complete and successfully defend a Senior Honors Thesis/Project.

The Senior Honors Thesis/Project is a 6-credit-hour independent project.  It may be a research, creative, or applied project and is completed under the direction of a faculty member.

Value

All students may benefit from the opportunity to work on a sustained individual project. Some of the benefits associated with the Senior Honors Thesis/Project include:

  • The ability to Graduate with Honors with distinction in your academic program of study
  • Preparation for further work at the graduate of professional level
  • Demonstration that you have the maturity, the persistence, the commitment, and the organizational skills to produce a challenging piece of research
  • Development of a sense of independence as a self-starting, highly motivated individual who can handle the challenge of a non-structured academic task

Process & Registration

Students typically begin their thesis in the third semester prior to graduation with the thesis proposal preparation semester. At the conclusion of that semester, students submit a thesis proposal and enroll for the credit hours during their final two semesters.

The Senior Honors Thesis/Project is six credit hours that are divided over three semesters, and students typically register for the Thesis Proposal Semester in the spring semester of their junior year.  Study abroad, student teaching, and other academic activities can alter the distribution of thesis semesters, so students planning to complete a thesis should be sure to work closely with the thesis coordinator.

Further Information

The Senior Honors Thesis Handbook contains all of the detailed information required for students and their advisors. Additionally, you review our Frequently Asked Questions that may answer some of those questions.

If you believe a thesis might be valuable to you but still need more information, please plan to attend one of the Senior Honors Thesis information meetings.

Senior Honors Thesis Archive

The Thesis Archive is comprised of the names, titles, and faculty advisors for every completed Senior Honors Thesis/Project and may be helpful for students interested in seeing what other students have done. Links are also provided for theses completed in recent years.
