Admissions

Undergraduate Admissions

When you enter Kent State University as a freshman or as a transfer student, you will be admitted directly into one of the JMC majors/concentrations.

Current Kent State students wishing to pursue a JMC major must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher to be admitted directly into our program and must maintain a 2.75 or higher to graduate and take JMC courses.

Current Kent State students with a GPA lower than 2.75 (but 2.0 or higher) may be admitted as pre-journalism and mass communication majors.

Current and transfer students are encouraged to meet with a JMC academic advisor to declare a major or pre-major.

Transfer Students

If you are transferring credits from another college or university and want to become a JMC major, your credits will be evaluated first by the Kent State University Office of Admissions and then by a JMC Academic Advisor.

Required Laptop Purchase

Incoming freshmen are required to purchase a laptop computer by the beginning of the spring semester using these purchasing requirements.

Tuition and Fees

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Need-based financial aid and grants are available through Kent State University Student Financial Aid. We also offer many scholarships for current JMC students.

Graduate Admissions

As one of only two nationally accredited journalism schools in the state of Ohio, JMC provides its students with a strong foundation to achieve their future goals in the rapidly changing media industry.  Kent offers a variety of courses within three areas of study in the JMC graduate program.

Degree Requirements

The masters program requires a minimum of 36 hours (including six hours for the thesis option or 3 hours for the non-thesis options). Students must:

  • Maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in all coursework.

  • Choose between three capstone options: writing a thesis, taking a comprehensive examination or preparing a professional project.

  • Earn a minimum of 6 hours in Thesis I (one) or a minimum of 3 hours in the non-thesis option.

  • Not take more than four hours of workshop credit to count towards the degree.

  • Complete at least 50 percent of coursework at the 60000 level. Up to six hours completed as a non-degree or guest student may count toward the degree.

Students may be eligible for up to nine hours of transfer credit from another graduate program at KSU after completing a transfer of credit application, which must be approved by the Graduate Coordinator and/or the Graduate Studies Committee.

Graduate Assistantships

Students enrolled full-time in the Kent JMC graduate program are eligible for paid graduate assistantships.

Requirements Checklist for Graduate Admission

  • Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0

  • Have a composite GRE score of at least 300

  • Submit a completed online Kent State University Graduate Application form. Forms are located on the Research and Graduate Studies web site.

  • Write a statement of purpose explaining why you are interested in graduate studies at Kent JMC and submit it online at the site above.

  • Send original copies of all college transcripts to the Division of Research and Graduate Studies.

  • Submit online recommendations from three people, at least one who is a professor and who was your instructor.

  • Resume

  • Have a TOEFL score of 100 or more for international students.

To be considered for graduate assistantships, applications must be submitted before March 1 of each academic year.
