Core Textbooks on Reserve

IMAGE: img_header_core-textbooks-webpage

For more than 100 years, University Libraries (UL) at Kent State has existed to provide resources, services, study space and programs to support learning and research for FREE to all students, faculty and staff at Kent State University. In April, we celebrated a record gate count of nearly 1.1 million in the main library on Kent Campus alone.

As our gate count continues to grow, so does the affordability of a college education. Many students arrive on campus without textbooks. College textbook prices are increasing faster than tuition and inflation (Huffington Post, January 4, 2013) with the annual cost of books and materials at $1,168 (The College Board).

Historically, UL has provided support materials and resources for classes as identified by teaching faculty, but not textbooks. As we are now aware of the need for textbooks for the successful completion of each class, UL has implemented a program called Core Textbooks on Reserve. This program was launched as a "pilot" program in January of 2013. UL applied $6,000 to the purchase of a small sample of textbooks required by the highest enrolled undergraduate courses with the most expensive books. The word spread quickly! Requests for more textbooks from more classes have grown outside our budget. Will you help?

UL helps ALL students. Core Textbooks on Reserve are available to students with not only financial need but also students who just don't have their textbook with them and need it for homework or study. Please consider making a donation to the Kent State University Foundation for the support of Core Textbooks on Reserve. What a wonderful way to choose to help ALL students at Kent State University by providing textbooks available on reserve in the Library for FREE!

On average, the cost of textbooks ranges from $100 to $300 each. Any and all contributions will help immensely!

$25,000 is the minimum donation to establish an endowment.
