Approval Timeline

Approval Timeline

Submit applications via email to ONE "discipline specific" IRB reviewer for an initial review. If your department/discipline does not have a reviewer, contact the IRB office at

  • IRB approval may take between 2 to 6 weeks. We encourage researchers to plan accordingly.
  • Protocols that are highly complex or are submitted with missing information and/or unanswered questions may take longer to process.
  • Applications must be completed electronically. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
  • Applications submitted on old forms will not be accepted.

Protocols are assigned one of the following types of review:

  • Full-Committee Review (level III)
This type of review is required for protocols that pose greater than minimal risk to subjects, involves deception, or involves prisoners. If your study has been identified as requiring a full-committee review you will be contacted by the IRB office and asked to attend an IRB meeting to address comments or questions from the IRB members.
  • Expedited Review (level II)
Protocols are reviewed by the IRB Chair and at least one other IRB member. This type of review is required for studies that involve minimal risk and fit into an expedited review category of research as defined by 45CFR46.
  • Exempt Review (level I)
This type of review is required for studies that meet exemption categories as defined by 45CFR46. Protocols that are deemed Exempt are not required to submit annual review forms.  A researcher cannot determine if their research is in the Exempt review category and must complete an IRB application and have that application reviewed by an IRB member. Investigators cannot begin data collection until they have received written approval from the IRB office.
