Graduate Assistantships

Applications must be submitted on or before March 1 prior to the fall semester when assistantships begin. Only those applicants who have been admitted to the M.L.I.S. program by March 1 will be considered for assistantships.

Advising Materials for the M.L.I.S. Degree Program

Catalog Year
The Catalog Year determines your program requirements. If you were admitted in a fall semester, then you follow the catalog for that year. If you were admitted in spring or summer, you follow the previous fall catalog. You may change your catalog year forward, but you may not change it to a previous year. If you decide to change your program requirements to a later catalog year, please complete the following form:
Course Planning
  • Once you have been admitted to the program, you should contact the academic advisor whose name is provided in your letter of admission. Do this prior to registering for your first classes, or at least before completing your first nine (9) credit program hours. Planning your program of study with an advisor is very important. The following documents and forms are designed to help you prepare for your program planning meeting with your advisor.

  • You must consult with and inform your advisor before registering for a workshop.
  • NOTE -- If you are registering for a workshop in SLIS, you DO NOT need to submit an approval form. You may register for the workshop in FlashLine as you would any other course. If the workshop is not in SLIS, contact before registering.
  • You may apply a maximum of four (4) graduate-level credits earned in KSU-SLIS Continuing Studies workshops toward your M.L.I.S. degree.
  • You cannot schedule workshops that coincide with scheduled class times. Permission to miss a class for his purpose must be obtained in advance from the course instructor. (Online classes or workshops that do not have a scheduled class time or face-to-face component are not likely to present a scheduling conflict. Consult with your instructor if you are unsure.)
  • You can earn degree credit only for SLIS workshops that do not overlap in content with SLIS courses you have already completed. You can only count towards your degree requirements either the workshop or the course but not both.
  • Consult the Workshop/Course Overlap List for a list of workshops and courses with overlapping content.
  • Individual Investigation
  • An individual investigation allows you to study a particular topic related to library and information science that is not covered within the curriculum or is not treated in the depth that you desire. An individual investigation is not meant to be used as a substitute for a course within the curriculum. You must review the policies stated in the following form, complete it, and seek your advisor’s approval. Upon approval, the SLIS office will register you; you cannot register for an individual investigation.
Program Modification
The following forms can be used for requesting exceptions from program and course requirements. Additional documentation for justification and evidence may be required.

Transferring Credit to Your Master’s Program

Please consult the student handbook to determine if transfer credits meet program requirements. Any request for transfer credits is subject to review and approval. Students should submit a transfer credit request before prior to their graduation application with an understanding that if their request is denied, they need to earn the missing credits and their graduation may be delayed if not fulfilling the graduation requirements on time.

Culminating Experience (CE) or Thesis Requirement

Each student pursuing the Master of Library and Information Science (M.L.I.S.) degree is required to complete one of the following options: LIS 60092 Culminating Experience Internship; LIS 60098 Culminating Experience Research Paper/Project: LIS 60199 Thesis; or LIS 60792 Culminating Experience Practicum in K-12 Libraries.

LIS60092, 60098, and 60792 were previously offered as options under LIS60670, which is no longer available (starting Fall 2014).

Handbooks, approval forms and other resources for each option are provided below.

LIS 60092 Culminating Experience (CE) Internship (3 credits)
  • M.L.I.S. CE Internship Handbook: This handbook is intended to guide M.L.I.S. students through the process of completing the CE Master’s Internship option (LIS 60092). It covers requirements, arrangement of the internship, placement with an internship site, deadlines, tips, grading and step-by-step instructions.
  • M.L.I.S. CE Internship Request for Approval Form: Students must complete this form and have it approved by their on-site supervisor and faculty internship advisor. The faculty internship advisor will then have the student registered for LIS 60092–CE Internship. [This form cannot be used for an elective practicum (LIS 60692).]
  • Internship Site Directory: This directory serves as a starting point for students looking to find an internship site.
  • E-portfolio: This section includes resources and guides to free e-portfolio software. Students should use this software to document the internship activities, objectives, work log and assessment of learning experience to submit to the faculty internship advisor at the conclusion of their internship.
LIS 60098 Culminating Experience (CE) Master's Research Paper / Project (3 credits)

  • M.L.I.S. CE Research Paper / Project Handbook: This handbook is intended to guide students through the process of completing the CE Master’s Research Paper / Project option (LIS 60098). Topics include prerequisites, the registration process, the role of the faculty advisor, writing the project proposal, deadlines, grading, how to approach research with human subjects and acceptable research products.
  • M.L.I.S. CE Research Paper / Project Request for Approval Form: Students must submit this form,along with a proposal and abstract, for approval by their faculty advisor. The faculty advisor will then have the student registered for LIS 60098–CE-Research Paper / Project.
LIS 60199 Thesis (6 credit hours):The thesis option is highly recommended for students who plan to pursue a research or a doctoral degree. A thesis is expected to be a substantial and original contribution to knowledge in the field.
  • Thesis Handbook: This handbook is intended to guide students through the process of completing the LIS Master’s Thesis (LIS 60199). It provides information on the thesis requirements, selection of advisor and committee members, and thesis procedures and timelines.
  • After consultation with the thesis faculty advisor, students are required to complete and submit the Thesis Registration Form to their advisor for approval prior to registration.
  • Students will be required to register for LIS 60299 Thesis II, if all thesis requirements are not completed during the semester of the last Thesis I registration.
LIS 60792 Culminating Practicum in K-12 Libraries (3 credits): Each student pursuing K-12 school library media licensure is required to complete a practicum in an educational setting. Below are links to the handbook and request for approval form for these students.

Elective Practicum

LIS 60692 Practicum-Libraries and Information Centers: This elective course offers students an opportunity to gain professional experience in a library, information center, museum, or media center, while choosing another option, such as a research paper, for their Culminating Experience. Students cannot select both the LIS 60692 Practicum and the LIS 60092 CE Internship or LIS 60792 CE Practicum in K-12 Libraries options.
